crisps are my weakness. not just because of the savoury flavours, but the crunch too. love a good crunch.

as part of my gluten-free reviews here on the blog, wellaby’s sent me some of their simple bakes to try. they’re a wholegrain snack that’s kind of a mix of crisps and small thin crackers. they come in three flavours: smoky bbq, salt & pepper and spicy chilli. all three are full of flavour and you certainly get a good amount in each packet.

simple bakes are all gluten free, nut free, vegan and free of artificial colours and flavours as well as preservatives. if you’re interested they’re also less than 100 calories per serving and have no trans fats.

on to the taste test! all of them were lovely and crunchy but not too hard. not so thin as they fell apart either. the flavour payoff was excellent and stayed consistent throughout the pack. the crunch lasted well when folded over and clipped to eat the following day. most of them remained their original shape and there weren’t too many crumbs at the bottom of the bag.

smoky bbq: these were unexpectedly my favourite. i don’t generally like bbq flavour things but these just left me wanting more. the flavour isn’t overwhelming, but it’s strong enough to pack a punch. a slight sweetness and a lovely rich smokey flavour. very easy to eat and i’d most definitely buy these if i saw them.

salt & pepper: i’ve been loving peppery things lately, and these didn’t disappoint. they don’t have much of a salty taste as the pepper is quite strong. which personally, i like. the pepper makes them almost spicy, and though very tasty not so ‘easy’ to eat as the bbq. good if you’re prone to wanting to eat a whole bag!

spicy chilli: i find chilli flavoured things a bit hit and miss. for me, these were in between. i tend to prefer sweet chilli so maybe that’s why i wasn’t as keen on these. again, very flavoursome but not so much to my taste. i think i’d prefer these with some dip rather than by themselves.

if more flavours were introduced i’d definitely give them a try. something cheesy perhaps? or something with garlic in would be fantastic.

overall, if you’re looking for a crunchy snack that’s something between crisps and crackers, is rich in flavour, vegan and gluten free i would recommend giving these a try. out of the three, i think most would like the smoky bbq the best, but if you’re looking for something with a little more ‘pow’ the other flavours will not disappoint.
