finding space (+ a giveaway!)

WD my passport ultra giveaway

this giveaway has finished and no further comments will be published. the winner has been notified. thank you for entering!

if you’re a creative in this day and age (or, heck, just someone that uses a computer) you’ll be using your desktop or laptop to either do all of your work on, or it’s the go to point after you’ve created your work by hand – for scans, colour correction, digitising, etc.

as illustrators and photographers particularly know …files can get pretty big. by big, i mean HUGE. not just in terms of dimensions, but file size too. you need a device that has the power to deal with this, but you also need space, right? if not for the main files, but for backups. it’s always best to keep copies on an external drives, and especially so if you work from different locations and can’t bring your main computing device with you everywhere you go.

WD portable hard drive

surface pro 4 and WD passport

of course there’s the cloud*, but sometimes you can’t get internet access, and need to get to your files there and then. so what do you need? a portable hard drive. western digital is just one company that has you covered in the form of my passport ultra. the device is small, light and comes in capacities from 1 – 3 TB which is more than enough for most peoples needs. (*you can use this for dropbox backup too)

my main device now is a surface pro 4 – which, although fantastic – this particular device doesn’t have much in terms of storage, so now having the passport i don’t have to worry about filling up all the space and having to delete things i’d rather keep. as i said before, work files can get big! because the passport is so portable, i can fit it in a bag with the surface and other items with ease, and go wherever i need to go ..even if it is just to a cafe. my only (minor) issue is that the cable that comes with it is a little short, but i’m sure you could easy find another longer one.

surface pro and external hard drive

fancy one too? it doesn’t matter if you’re not a creative – everyone has digital memories they treasure. i’m giving one away identical to mine (blue, 1tb) to a lucky reader!

all you have to do is comment below with your answer to this: tell me about a memory you wouldn’t want to lose.

a Rafflecopter giveaway

giveaway is open to UK readers, and will be live for 2 weeks. commenting is mandatory, and the other choices are optional. the winner will have up to 7 days to respond before another winner is chosen. good luck!

There was one day last year that totally stands out – we were visiting my family in Wales, we were all together and we drove to the beach about an hour away from home. The weather was amazing, we swam in the sea and then had a BBQ in the sand dunes and the whole things was perfect and I think my favourite day of the whole year :) – This is such a great giveaway! I always need more space! x

Such a fantastic giveaway here! I’m trying to organise my hard drive/usb’s better to find things easier!

A memory I wouldn’t want to loose would be my favourite graphic design/illustration work from the past few years. It’s been incredible to see how my work and style has progressed through my studies and how far I’ve come. I’ve grown so attached to major pieces that have been the milestones into becoming the creator I am now and I’d hate to lose them. (Plus they are massive files so I’d rather not have to go through the process of making them again!)

I’ve actually already lost quite a few memories thanks to the digital age and lack of knowledge about backing things up correctly. It’s been over 10 years now but I remember saving everything on my computer to CDs so that I had everything backed up… but it didn’t work and I only discovered this after my Dad had gotten rid of the old computer! Lesson learnt! So now I’ve only got the Prom photos that I had uploaded to Myspace which is kinda sad, but good ol’ Myspace, hey? xx

I am always photographing everything, particularly using film which I always think captures the moment in a different way to digital. Some amazing memories I have captured so far include Glastonbury festival with my best friends last year and holidays with my family. Sadly last year my computer corrupted a lot of my files including some of my photographs and a lot of my university work (I am an Illustration student so I know all about have copious amounts of large files such as work I have done on Photoshop and the like) which I was gutted about as I had just started looking for a external hard drive to start backing it all up!! Would love for that to not be something I would worry about happening again so winning a hard drive to keep all my cherished memories and hard work safe would be awesome.
